It had been a year since I last saw Les Mis and up until that point I had not seen the 3rd National Tour. Needless to say, I was extremely impressed. Dave Clemmons as Valjean was fantastic. I really enjoyed how he interpreted the music with his pop/theatre tenor voice. And as Javert, Chuck Wagner turned out to be the best I've ever seen. He had an incredible pop/theatre baritone voice. And when Clemmons and Wagner sang together, they both played off of each others' voice creating an incredible sound. This was really apparent during the Prison Scene and Confrontation. Jill Geddes as Fantine was also fantastic. She had a beautiful pop/theatre voice that really made you empathize for her character. Her voice was a little lighter than Susan Gilmours' and she stylized the music terrifically. JP Dougherty was good as Thenardier and I was ecstatic to see that Gina Farell as Mme. Thenardier had rejoined Les Mis after San Francisco. She remains one of my all time favorites. Christopher Yates was a little too laid back as Enjolras. And Ron Sharpe as Marius was a really good actor but he sang his songs too straight. Then Candsese Marchese as Eponine was truly amazing. She gave the best vocal performance I've ever heard any Eponine do. Her voice was flawless and she hit all of her high notes dead on. And she sang with incredible style. I especially liked some things she added to On My Own. Tamra Hayden as Cosette was a terrific singer and a very good actress. The only flaw in this production was the sound quality. When the ensemble would sing together on the big chorus numbers, they came out sounding muted like there was a problem with the microphones picking them up.
