The very first production of Les Mis I saw was The Original Los Angeles Company in 1988. I went on my 14th birthday with my chorus class from school. Before we went, I had never heard any of the songs from Les Mis. But I did know through word of mouth how popular the show was. So, our chorus teacher told us what the show was about. She also had two students sing Castle on a Cloud and On My Own. As soon as I heard On My Own I thought it was an incredible song musically. I thought it had an amazing chord structure. I had never heard anything like it before. When I finally did see the show, I was blown away by how good it was. I never thought I'd be able to sit through 3 hours of non-stop singing. But I did. It was an amazing show. I only have vague memories of individual performances because I had no other productions to compare them to at the time. So I don't have an authentic review for this production.
